The Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), Mahidol University is a leading institute in Thailand and in Southeast Asia and has functioned as Thailand’s population reference center since 1974. IPSR plays a major role in population research and related policy formulations, such as in family planning, migration (particularly with regard to undocumented migrants from neighboring countries), health, and reproductive health policies.
IPSR is mandated to undertake four interrelated activities: research, training, academic services, and information dissemination. There are eight research areas: (1) Demographic Transition and the Family, (2) Reproductive Health, Sexuality and HIV/AIDS, (3) Population and Health, (4) Migration/Urbanization and Labor Studies, (5) Gender and Development, (6) Population and Environment, (7) Demographic Studies in Southeast Asia, and (8) Policy Research. Currently, there are three degree programs: the M.A. Program in Population and Social Research, the M.A. Program in Population and Reproductive Health, and the Ph.D. Program in Demography (International Program).
Non-degree programs include Thai-language training programs in Qualitative Research and Qualitative Data Analysis, Quantitative Research, Statistics and Quantitative Data Analysis, Monitoring & Empowerment Evaluation, Outcome Mapping, and Community Research. English-language programs for international participants include those in Monitoring & Evaluation of HIV/AIDS and Population & Health Programs.
IPSR continues to strengthen national and international collaboration and research networks, particularly with regard to research on aging population, health consequences of population changes, population and environment, new technologies and population structure, population mobility and health in the Greater Mekong Subregion, and the demographic surveillance system. IPSR aims to establish a Centenarian Study Center as well as to strengthen our Population Information Reference Center for the Greater Mekong Subregion.
We welcome colleagues from within and outside the Asian region to share knowledge as well as conduct timely research/training on key population and social issues with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for all.
